If you are going to employ someone then join now, before you do. Your subs are cheaper, your subs are based on the no. of employees when you join, you don't have to declare employee numbers each year.
I've been through employee tribunals twice (before I joined FSB) and it hurts, because you can't afford to fight them, so the g**s get away with a load of your cash just for being darn cheeky.
FSB covers you before, (and believe me, as a owner/manager you WILL breach some employment regulation somewhere along the line, becuase it is totally impossible to comply with all of them unless you have a HR person), they also cover all the fees and costs (which lets you fight the buggers, because letting it get to tribunal will cost you £1800), and they also cover the award (if you loose).
I have had a claim lodged against me by my daughters godmother!! There is no such thing as "it will never happen to me" with employment & employees. And this protection will let you sleep at night.
