Oddly, it feels slightly biased to post in support of John's idea as most of you now know we're together in real life. However, John and I generally say it as we each see it and aren't afraid to disagree with each other either.
I think awards ceremonies on forums can be fun and I personally hate the 'PC' world in which we now seem to live where we have such idiocy as children not being allowed to play competitive sports at school, in case the 'loser' finds it too difficult to cope with.
As someone else posted, certain things *should* be remembered. As a community grows 'collective memories' do form part of what makes it cohesive. But regardless of the sociology, who could find offense at an awards ceremony in which, hell yes, let's have a category for 'Funniest old fart', 'Oldest old fart', 'Funniest post' etc etc.
I think it would be a sad world indeed where no-one could be 'best' at anything. Striving to be the 'best' is what has driven science, discovery etc. As long as people are valued for 'trying' to be the best then I see nothing wrong in rewarding the 'best'.
But as I would see it the suggested awards ceremony would be more about fun and a little silliness.
