Depends. If you have Skype you can make free Skype-to-Skype calls. Other VoIP companies bundle in free calls with their offerings.
On the subject of broadband, ditch BT and go with Be There. I'm with them and get 11MB download speeds despite the fact I am over 3km away from the exchange.
