I am not sure I understand fully what you are trying to do. You can sometimes do some crafty things with Find & Replaces in Word to save a lot of re-typing/re-formatting, but I don't think that is what you want.
When you refer to the "contents list" is this a Word table of contents? If so, then that would be automatically updated when the content it links to is updated.
Please can you explain more using a specific example as I am not clear on what you have explained so far - but it may just be me!
