I know the answer to Google (if you mean adwords) - you do not pay VAT on the amount you are charged. I had this explained by the VAT man just a few months ago when discussing my claim at the time.

But isn't that only if you are VAT registered and have submitted to Google your VAT number - same as trade with any EC company?
im only going on what the vat man told me. Steve must be vat reg to be aksing this question, so the same appliers to him as it did me.

The short answer is that if you cannot tell whether or not you have been charged UK VAT, then it is highly unlikely you have the proper evidence to reclaim any.
You could try getting a 'VAT invoice' out of these companies. That would clear up the confusion.
The confusion arises (well it did for me!) because Google tells you to asses your own vat under the 6th directive. I therefore thought (wrongly) I had to calculate the vat in addition to their invoivce costs. This was not so. The vat man agreed their wording was confusing to the customer and he was passing the info back to his superiors.

Re Google -the simple reason for that is that it is based in Ireland.
Assuming a business is VAT registered by giving Google (or any EU based business outside the UK) your VAT number they wont charge you VAT on their services and will actually backdate VAT wrongly charged as I have helped several clients reclaim.
As Peter says - do you have an invoice showing the VAT charged? If not you don't have a valid VAT invoice for reclaim purposes and therefore cant reclaim.
I don't have any clients advertising on Facebook but i thought that was a US company. Have to check with them, they might have a UK branch and be charging UK VAT. If they do it will be on their invoices. No idea what the other company is.

My Facebook and Lynda.com accounts are charged in $ then exchanged into £ as they're taken out of my account.
I take it from James's comment that this means no VAT is charged.
