The big problem for first movers is that the product is everything. They see the products features but are unable to translate these in to tangible benefits to consumers.
Hence someone else comes along and refines the product, and delivers it as an attractive and compelling proposition. The second mover.
Down the line you'll get the bandwagon jumpers. These are the business that as the market matures engage in heavy promotion (selling is part of promotion and therefore marketing) to ring out as many sales as they can. Of course the second mover still benefits as in the public's eyes they are the original product. Often the first mover by this point is a footnote.
So the lesson for first movers is do your research and refine your product so it meets market needs, otherwise a second mover will do the job for you.
