Oooh, that's a tough one.

1st: lots of research, internet wasn't available then so out on the streets with a clipboard in my hand and ask millions of questions Local library became my 2nd home for about 6months prior.

2nd: No preparation, I was invited to start it and so did, I did prepare a Business Plan which required some fore-thought

3rd: It was a buy out, so little preparation, apart from delving into their accounts

4th: Lots of research online, and was much easier to do. Lots of questionnaires to people, researching competitors etc and all took about 9 months

Prepare a business plan - write everything down
It's no good in your head - get it down on paper - you'll ask yourself more questions as a result of this and be better prepared as a business owner.

Great advice and examples above. A couple I would like to add;
  • Search for reviews of your future competition. This throws up loads of things you can build into your plan as USPs for your business.
  • Try to find additional revenue streams for the business, or a few cross-promotion oppertunities, and build them into your cashflow/biz plan.
And most importantly, once you have done enough research and planning to start the business....
  • Get really, really excited about it. Jumping up and down excited! This will help pull you through the long hours when starting a business, and help remember why your doing it when its hard
Good luck mate

well more recently I have used the business link guide. Once you register on the site you can work your way through your own personalised plan which I have found really useful to keep me on track as otherwise I go off and do the stuff that is interesting and fun rather than the necessary stuff

Market Research is an absolute biggy and I wouldnt do anything else really until you have done that

Some of the banks also provide CDs and guides for business planning that you might find useful too.
