Default Data Protection Act - do I need to register ?

Do I need to register with the Data Protection Act ? as far as I'm aware only some buisnesses do ?

If you are only collecting information that is required as part of forming a contract of supply of goods or services, I don't believe you need to register.

If you are getting info that is extra (i.e. date of birth), then you do.

Cost is around £50/year.

Great question Fuzzy

I phoned them when we first started the business and we didn't have to register at the time but I can't remember why not

It will be interesting to see what comes out in this thread.

Well I have just been onto their online form and "computer says no", but just wanted to double check......so I take it that's a yes then as I would like DOB to send cards to

You don't need to for an e-commerce store etc

We had to as we do direct mail for customers which involves handling external address files etc

You should not have to register if capturing and recording data for accounts and records purposes but you can double check with them. Even DOB should come under that if relevant for accounting and records.
