Start At The Beginning Many small business owners fall at this first hurdle - the web site. Designed badly, your would-be customer clicks away. Designed well, they are inspired to stay. Good web design involves a lot more than the knowledge of coding languages and 'where to get cheap hosting'; the truth is that something as simple as the colour of the background of your web site can inspire trust and interest!
Choose Your Customers Carefully
As arrogant as it sounds, this is an important part of online business. It is said mutual liking accounts for up to 50% of success whilst staying away from those who will 'never be happy' can only help to forward your business. Today there are many ways for your customers to review you; forums, del.ici.ous, blogs and word of mouth account for just a small amount of methods in which you can be praised or torn apart.
Two Types Of Customer
There are really only two types of customer for any business: the 'passively satisfied' customer and the 'actively satisfied' customer.
A passively satisfied customer is one who chooses to become your client because the business is already known to them. This could be because the business is a recognized name or a relation or friend has recommended them. A good example of this is a Law Firm who gain many, many customers this way. You could say that passively satisfied customers become customers by accident and as such are usually not very 'loyal'. They will tend to walk away as soon as another business offers a better deal. As there is no bond between these customers and the business, they will have no qualms about going elsewhere.
An actively satisfied customer is one who has a relationship with the business - they most often deal with a certain person or are invited to certain meetings and special events and feel that they are 'special'. They can give good reasons for having chosen a particular business and are actively satisfied with the service provided and will say so whenever an opportunity presents itself. They can identify with the good service provided. For them, it is unique!
How To Convert The Passive Customer Into An Actively Satisfied Customer
Good customer service is paramount in making the transition from passively satisfied to actively satisfied - a transition that will reward your business with a long-term relationship as well as free advertising via word-of-mouth.
An example of customer service transforming customers from passive to active is the reason we all visit a certain restaurant - we are on first-name terms with the waiter and know we'll get a good service. It makes it a little easier for us to spend our money since we are all inclined to be more generous to people who are friendly and, if mistakes are made, we remain calm and collected, provided that we like those we are dealing with.
