Default Well, names and that!!

I had noticed an other forums, that lots of people were asking for advice and help on choosing a business name. I myself have never had a problem choosing a business name ....... what advice would you give ?

I would start by saying don't put potential names on a business forums for fear of loosing the domain name and then maybe having to pay a fortune.

What would you guys say the criteria is for choosing a name..............let's help those just starting out

make sure it is available in companies house and as a domain name, it's so much easier and better to search for a company you know by typing www.companyname.co.uk or .com

Very important.

Also consider whether you'd be able to trademark it.

You could go the descriptive path e.g. "John's fab pies" or something more oblique such as a word connected to your bizz in another language...

How do you think I came up with mine?

maybe the domain name and company name as the words
that would be your main keywords.

Nothing-with-a-hyphen-in-it-as-search-engines-dont-like-these-and-humans-are-not-that-good-at-typing-them-either.com

Register the domain name (after doing a search) in multiple extensions (eg .com, .org, .eu, .co.uk etc)

I've heard differently from several good SEO's!

In some cases, the hyphen is required for aesthetics:

penisland.com

That's for Pen Island - not Penis Land...

search engines treat a hyphen as a space so can actualy be benificial.

as for chosing a name if the domain URL is not available I think chosing a good company name is more important than a good URL for long term benefit.

Yes you may lose a slight edge seo wise, but having a good easily remembered name is important, that way people will search for your name on the engines e.t.c.

Agreed, sometimes they can be handy (eg I have i-tender.co.uk and itender.co.uk - both drew attention and served a purpose)

In a service environment where you need to recite email addresses over the phone it is easier to go without a hyphen.

Many of my clients (day job) have a gap in their vcompany name but run the words together in the domain name.
