Default Best practices for online payment deposits

Let's say your website allows people to hire power tools. How do you prevent customers from hiring them for a specified period... and then never returning them? This hasn't happened to us, and we would like to keep it this way!

Should we take a deposit, and then refund it when the power tools are returned? We are using RBSWorldpay's Business Gateway solution, and I don't know if they provide this functionality.

We almost always deliver and collect them ourselves. If a rogue customer refuses to return any items, we would prefer a simple and relatively easy method of not losing out financially. Electronic fund recovery = good; having to get the courts/bailiffs involved = too much hassle.
