Yep agree on all the points made there...
Nothing to do with optimisation, as in SEO, guys (as that's what I thought it meant!)
Its about making the whole checkout process easier for the customer to buy.

All good, basic points that you ignore at your peril.
One point in addition to those is the checkout length...jumping through hoops to complete an order is a nightmare BUT the vendor wants to ensure it is genuine.
It is indeed a fine balancing act.
One of the best online (IMHO) is the Argos checkout. Streamlined and you decide which path to take, register or not. Very nice, gets 7/10 from me.
Optimisation of the checkout does indeed tend to fall by the wayside in too many e-commerce projects.

You are right. A lot of people confuse conversion optimisation with search engine optimisation. The only way they (slightly) overlap is the bit where the SEO tries to ensure by targetting the traffic to a demographic that the visitors driven to the site are more likley than the norm to buy / convert
