Default Is there any reason for the lack of competitors for PayPal?

Does PayPal own any patents to certain technology for online processors?
Wouldnt it be great if we can have more companies that could provide the same exact service and fees .. The only company I know that come to the cloest to PP is Moneybookers.. but they are still not quite as good or rather complete as PP yet.

I think Paypal is more widely known and they operate in more countries accross the world than any of the others, and since being part of Ebay, They've seemed to be the top of the online processors.

It would be nice to see some competition, but to be honest i don't think the others have the money to compete with the paypal/ebay clan

paypal have taken something quite complicated and made it relatively easy.

Moneybookers is good for countries who don't have paypal - croatia is one where I have done some business. The insist on sending you a slip through the post to verify your address and everytime you add or remove a card - they debit a small amount to make sure it is yours.

Paypal is expensive. The only major competitor I think is Google Checkout. Do Amazon have their own one - anyone?

PayOffline is a good option to have... you order online and go to your nearest PO/Pay Point to pay the bill - good if you have customers who dont trust giving card details online or who dont actually have a bank card

Have to say there are loads of competitors.

It is just a case of whether you want to pay monthly and a lower percentage (in most cases) or pay per payment with a higher percentage of the value and then pay for taking money out!!

Most serious/large e-commerce traders look at bespoke design/bepoke shopping cart and dedicated servers.

So really it is all down to willingness to pay

Thumbs up There are some goods ones actually...

There are quite a lot of PayPal alternatives. The first three below are very good recognised paypal alternatives, secure and cater for the UK and EU.

Moneybookers.com
Nochex.com
PPPay.com

Others you may want to look at are:

GoogleCheckout.com
2Checkout.com
AlertPay.com
Amazonpayments.com

It helps that we talk about the alternatives much more, use them and it encourages others to use those paypal alternatives.

I think with the amount of scamming on the Internet, Paypal being the most recognized goes a long way to keeping it number one.

I hope Google gets its checkout together and starts offering it all over the world, as right now I think they only support merchants with bank accounts in the UK and US.

There really does need to be more competition, I know personaly when all is said and done my Paypal fees are 5% of the gross these days.
