On my web development business we've been developing a free shopping cart for about a year or so now.
The benefits are that you can create your products lists off the internet in an excel spreadsheet and then upload them. Litterally thousands of products can be added and simply uploaded, the shopping cart then processes them automatically.
The idea behind this shopping cart is to make it as simple as possible. We're making it for our own use, but also to provide hosting server providers with a solution that can be deployed easily for their clients.
The only thing that we'll make money on is the templates for changing the front end design, or creating a custom design, and bolt on packages such as SMS (mobile phone) order notifications.
If you had this shopping cart, what features / bolt-ons would you like to see that would benefit your business?
Yep, good one.... there is alot of demand for this, although often requires a subscription to a gateway that can do this and from memory you pay for a batch of lookups or a monthly subscription to a Royal mail or 3rd party service. We did this for a client a while back where they wanted to match up the address that the user entered by making sure it was correct else when they uploaded their delivery spreadsheet to Parcel force it wouldnt accept it if the postcode didnt have spaces in it or if it was wrong.
Aye, we've actually developed the gateway systems for a company in the US using the USPS data - its not that much different from the UK Postcode side.
The subscription option is going to be the cheapest. You could setup your own gateway, but the license fees are about £6-12k per year depending on what you are doing with the data, number of updates you require etc.

Great - thanks. We have an automated sales system already in place www.liveqs.com which can be used as a shopping cart and has the USPS gateways and Parcel Force integration recently added, so we'll probably take it from there.
Our temporary website is up.. www.phpprocart.com - I'll be adding a demo of the cart on there soon for you to try out. If you want to move over to our shopping cart from what you have already, we provide a free service to do this. We import all your products and product images into our shopping cart and away you go
