I think it's a personal choice but it does give your visitors more option.

More options = more chance of conversions.

PLUS if you are an adwords user, you can process 10 times the amount of adsepnd as transactions. So you can offset the cost of adwords against it, PLUS you get to show the google checkout logo next to your adwpords which is a deffo eyecatcher and will increase CTR.

But as said, it is a personal choice.

Is it difficult to set up and use. How does it work exactly. Can they buy your stuff straight from google products or something?

Its very restrictive. You must have a Google account to use it, even Paypal allow's you to buy through their payment page without opening an account with them.

The combinations that have worked well for us in the past is a UK payment service provider (Protx, Worldpay etc) as the primary payment option, Paypal as the secondary and postal payments.

There are now choices such as PayOffline (.com) which allow customers to place an order through your online shop and then complete the purchase at any one of 15,000 paypoint outlets... or is it payzone

Yes, i would (and do!). In my experience, most punters don't mind entering their information into google checkout - it's always worth having another payment option though and i found that protx with an RBOS merchant account was the lowest-cost alternative. This one also offers you a virtual terminal to be able to take card details over the phone. The great thing about GC is, as stated, that you can offset your adwords spend against your transaction costs which can save you a few quid. GC is much cheaper than paypal too - i resent paying transaction charges at all but ime gc is typically about 30-40% of the paypal costs. You do need your web dev to put a secure socket layer on your hosting though - yep that costs a bit each month (think i'm paying £15 for that).

Aside from the SSL certificate, it's a good option to give customers that for whatever reason don't want to use their card details or Paypal.

If you use Protx you can now use Paypal through them too. I like Protx because it's a one-off monthly fee regardless of how many transactions. One advantage of Google Checkout is that you can add 'buy it now' buttons next to individual products, we are going to be testing that soon. Google Checkout is fairly new but knowing Google it's bound to be up there with Paypal sooner or later..........

We have google checkout along with protx and pp - we get quite a few orders paid for by google so I think it is worth it.
