I'll be working on the desktop tomorrow so i'll test it.

No good on the laptop as it definately wont make any difference as it will be absorbed by the battery and charging circuit.

Can someone link to the google black page?

Andy.

Well now that IS interesting!

Thanks for the link by the way.

Ok, ive put a test meter on my 22" widescreen LCD monitor.

viewing this thread, consumption was bouncing between 41 and 42 watts

I click the link to the black page an the power consumption bounces between 42 and 43 watts.

Ive done this about 10 times switching back and forth between the largely white page of A1 and the black google page, same result every single time.

Ray, you are greener than google!

Andy.

Only on old CRT monitors. On modern flat screens the difference is little to none

In fact now its been running on the meter for a few minutes, its settled down somewhat.

Its pretty stable at 40 watts on A1 page and 42 watts on black ultra efficient (but bu****it) google page.

The reason i doubted it having the effect claimed is that LCD screens use polarising crystals, so the back lighting is constant. The bit i was unsure of was the power draw of the actual LCD panel and whether more current draw would occur on its transparent phase or on its translucent phase (that may be incorrect terminology, but i know what i mean!) ie the polarising of the crystals.

and not many people use CRT's anymore.

It would be interesting to try the same test on a CRT as i think it will be less difference than people imagine.
