I have found that setting email notifications to on by default can sometimes bring back newbies that have posted then forgotten about the forum. An email that someone has replied to a long forgotten post or email notification of a PM can a good memory jogger. If people don't like the email notifications, they can turn them off.
I don't do email notification on posts, as sometimes my inbox can get a bit hectic!
However, I do for PM's
PM's is a no brainer - I've changed the default already - would it in be in order to amend current members to this 9unless I can see they've already chosen their own settings) - or should I leave well alone?
With the posts - there is an option to send one email per day summarising all subscribed posts - perhaps that would be the best setting?

I've never used that option before, but if their threads have been busy might it not trigger some people's spam filters when they receive a sudden influx of 100's of emails from the same address though?
From memory, vb will email you if there's a reply on the post. If you don't visit the site again, and more posts are made, it won't send another email. It'll only send you further emails once you've visited, and read what's there

That's true about it only sending one email until you revisit the forum, but if you're an active user of the site then you're likely to have emails for most of the posts from each thread you've posted in queued up to be sent to you by the end of the day.
