There was a power cut at the data centre at 5:05am this morning. They had it sorted for about 95% of the 5,000+ servers that are in there by 7am but some servers (like A1) didn't come back online correctly and required manual intervention. All sorted now...
Power cut?
What happened to a good old UPS, and diesel generator backup? wouldnt have thought a data center would dare operate without one!
If you read my post again you will see that the UPS did kick back in as it should have done but the server services did not restart correctly due to the sudden loss of power and required manual intervention.
Not that it really matters, but I'm just interested for my own knowledge. If the UPS kicked in, why did the services need restarting; would they not have remained running because the UPS would have kept the server powered up?
Unlike your home UPS, a data centre UPS protects essential equipment first and foremost and could still cause a normal server to reboot dependent on the severity of the outage and its location...
