I think as long as this doesnt make the forum seem Cliquey then its a good idea.
There is nothing worse IMO than all the people with 2k posts winning everything with "in jokes" as i have seen on other forums. It has driven me away from at least 2 in the past Just my opinion of course

I know where you're coming from Mike, which was the basis for my point earlier about how it can give off (sometimes but not always) a clique effect - but thats just because everyone is so pally here and whilst most new folk readily join in at A1 there are a few that stand on the outside looking in.
Hopefullly and thankfully we are not as scary as some forums that beat some newbies with a stick, but keeping it as fun-silly as possible will make it a laugh meaning absolutely anyone can join in and that anyone can win, not just the obvious or the regulars.
