One of my next tasks is to automate things behind the scenes regarding user memberships permissions, regarding things like posting links, signatures, access to private section and PM limits etc and I'd like your feedback!
This is what I'm thinking:
< 15 Posts - no posting links - no sig - no private access - 25 PM box limit
16 - 100 Posts - links and sigs allowed - no private access - 100 PM box limit
101 - 499 Posts and minimum one month since joining - links and sigs allowed - free private access - 200 PM box limit
Sigs will have 300 character limit
500 - 2000 Posts - as above - with 300 PM limit
2001+ Posts - as above and 400 character sig limit
Posts in introductions will not count towards qualification criteria
Phew! I just creep into the Private area with this one.

I'd not be intending to apply these rules retrospectively to active members - but we need a mechanism in place from here on in as I've been doing all this manually, which is nuts!
I still personally think the PM limit is very high. I would reduce the 16-100 posts to 50, 101-499 to 100 and then any others to a max of 150.
That's interesting, as the vB default is 200 - and I get loads of requests to make the limit higher - I suppose because members are doing business via PM (or gossiping lol)
I suppose the problem is how much resource does the PM system chew up on the server!

At the end of the day....no matter what level you give them people will want more. If you set it to say 150 max then we will just have to be a bit more diligent with our housekeeping.

The problem is the larger the site gets, which it obviously will, the more it will use up resouces (although I have to be honest and say I dont know how much)and once you have introduced the large limits it hard to then change it to a lower number.
I'm not sure really why people would need to have more than 200 in their inbox! Surely any they feel are that important to be kept for longer could be printed out.

Oh yes, I completely agree. Was perhaps being just a little frivolous. Sorry.
