One of my next tasks is to automate things behind the scenes regarding user memberships permissions, regarding things like posting links, signatures, access to private section and PM limits etc and I'd like your feedback!
This is what I'm thinking:
< 15 Posts - no posting links - no sig - no private access - 50 PM box limit
16 - 49 Posts - links and sigs allowed - no private access - 200 PM box limit
Personally, I would make access to the private section a bit higher, 50 posts doesn't seem a lot and I wouldn't make the PM box so high as it encourages people not to clear. Just experience from on my own forum.
yeah imagine when we have thousands of users Ray, what effect would that have then?!!
Exactly why i posted this thread - I need advice on how to proceed as I'd rather get it right from the outset, rather than mess about with it later and pee people off
I'll rethink the PM box limits, as per Tono's suggestion (Phil mentioned not to have them too high as well, from a hosting perspective)
Where to set private access is the toughest one to decide far as I can tell!
What I found when private access was lower was that a lot of silly posts were made in order to gain access to the private section, which kind of defeats the object really. I also have a minimum number of registration days on mine as well which does help people to realise access isn't simply as easy as making hello posts or putting in one liners and it means you also get to know members before they get that private access.
I personally would put your PM box much lower for those that are new joiners and in the under 15 posts. To be honest they shouldn't need the space for 50 PM's and an email is sent to alert people when their inbox is full or nearing it.
A minimum registration time is a cracking idea - I didn't realise that was possible Toni - and I take your point about silly posts to hit a target that is too low.
