Default Question about chipboard ...

Afternoon guys (and girls )

I've just got some new racking for my stockroom and hubby is currently on his hands and knees doing a Blue Peter.

It's metal framed ... like Mechano ... with chipboard shelves.

I'd like to be able to wipe the shelves to keep them dust free (ish) and neither of us have a clue when it comes to DIY so I wondered if anyone knows whether you can varnish chipboard.

If so is there any particular product that would be best for the job?

Cheers

You can if you like.

I have the same kind of racking and I just wipe the shelves with a damp cloth every now and again. It's no drama and our racking gets a damn good hammering with all kinds of dusty mucky crap.

Unless it's real chad valley rough arse chip board?

Cheaper to prime them with a couple of coats of oil based paint

It's actually really nice and smooth so if I can get away with out coating it in something then all the better

I'm chuffed to bits with it ... but then I'm not on my hands and knees putting it together

If you dont paint it, just make sure you dont get it too wet as chipboard soaks up the water and will warp and go soggy, it may also expand and split. a midly damp cloth in somewhere where it will dry wont cause you any problems though.

I'm lucky that my stock is "dry" and there's no chance of any leaks so as long as I don't get silly wiping the shelves down I should be ok

Cleaning won't be too regular ... I rarely get chance to do the housework
