The answer is dan raine, rob somerville and ed dale are very clever guys.
Even their approach to keyword analysis was new and better.
I have no idea what htey intend to do on this years challenge, but I can say last year they were going through steps and stages using unusual web2 properties, and the challengers were getting #5 ranking on google for terms that were getting 100 hits a day within just a matter of hours!
Following their ideas, I created a site in the fiercely competitive diet/recipe world which started selling in a matter of days .....
I think they will shy away from social mediathis year, not because the ideas did not work - they worked too well - sadly some spammers got in on the programme and managed to wreck the relationships with tumblr, netscape, stumble and others to name but a few
The problem is they are trail blazers.
eg Last year... (not in the 30DC) They noticed the power of scribd long before the rest of the internet community, and the net result of their promoting that media - was to lead to an overload that caused scribd to go nofollow
So I doubt if ed will risk that this year, no idea what they will do instead.
It is always entertaining and informative....
I learnt a lot. Not to be missed in my view...

Just done some KW analysis...on the new niche idea..
Now there isnt much traffic to break wind but there are well over 20000 searching a synonym (f**t)
So if you can convert just 2% of those, thats 400 a day at (say) $11 since you wont do it for $10....thats a $4000 per day business you (and everyone else) will be literally turning their noses up at!!
So get to work on the SEO... Their may be some production problems....
and whistable asda may run out of baked beans..

I am a bit unclear about this - sorry, despite the time and effort of many on this thread and the other more lengthy one to explain. Many seem very positive about it.
Is this of value only really to businesses who sell online or would it be of genuine value to our company who have a website but don't sell directly online and are mainly B2B?
If it is worth doing, should I be going through the pre-season (which from what I can tell was mainly social networking oriented) or should I wait until the August event?
Sorry, if I am missing something (quite possible!), but understandably as my time is limited, I don't want to embark on it if it is not going to be of value to us.
