Deffo worth it - we joined especially to access the lower merchant account rates and the rest of their services look fabby. They will help you if you ever get investiagated for VAT or bus tax issues, you get cheaper bus insurance and loads of advice.
There are also local groups where you can go and network and find advice etc.
About £130 for the first year and £100 after that - more if you have a larger number of employees.
I have looked at the FSB website and cannot see how much membership costs. Is it on there? If not, please can someone post here the cost of annual membership and any additional costs there are.
I'm a member and its worth it because:
Better merchant rates with Streamline
Free banking with Co-op
Legal advice line
Paid for protection against VAT inspection
Bi monthly publication-keeps you in touch with legislation etc
It saved £250 alone on the streamline set up /joining fee!
Will be employing another person within the next year I would hope
I'll give them a go
Sorry - i'm going mad here today!!!
If you are going to employ someone then join now, before you do. Your subs are cheaper, your subs are based on the no. of employees when you join, you don't have to declare employee numbers each year.
I've been through employee tribunals twice (before I joined FSB) and it hurts, because you can't afford to fight them, so the g**s get away with a load of your cash just for being darn cheeky.
FSB covers you before, (and believe me, as a owner/manager you WILL breach some employment regulation somewhere along the line, becuase it is totally impossible to comply with all of them unless you have a HR person), they also cover all the fees and costs (which lets you fight the buggers, because letting it get to tribunal will cost you £1800), and they also cover the award (if you loose).
I have had a claim lodged against me by my daughters godmother!! There is no such thing as "it will never happen to me" with employment & employees. And this protection will let you sleep at night.
We are members and it provides some security, although I have just written a blog questioning whether organisations like the FSB could ultimately find themselves replaced by Web 2.0 - forums like this, business networking sites like ours etc.
