In my younger days, I, like many of you, did some freelance trouble shooting at other companies, I recommend it. It makes you think about how to solve problems that larger companies suffer and avoid those mistakes in your own business.
One thing that it always left lingering in my mind though was 'is the founder the best person to run the company'. What I saw too often was a willingness to listen to outside advise, but a total barrier to act upon it.
Often a Proprietor knew they needed to make changes to survive, they even paid (me) to be told the same, but did nothing and collapsed.
It made me think from a young age...."am I the best person to run my companies, or should I fire myself"....and to that ends, I have always brought people in to run my companies, while I take a back seat and act as an advisor.
I know my own skill base, and sometimes that is not heading up a company, I am a great leader, motivator and instigator, I am probably a poor manager, which is why I don't attempt to manage.
IP2, I am a fantastic Manager and very capable of making lots of money for other people it seems!
I am out of my comfort zone with my online store as I am used to running real ones with excellent results!
Sadly I cannot finance a real one for numerous reasons....all dull
So, I could never fire me as this is my baby

James Caan took his recruitment business from 0-£14m, and then passed it over to a management team, which the different skill set needed to grow and established business, as opposed to getting a new business off the ground. They took it from £14m to £140m.
It takes an honest man to step back from their own business and say "i'm not the best person to do this".

Well, why not send as many Christmas ecards as you like for only £5.99, save a fortune, put your company name on the message and be green at the same time

So over to you. Should you fire yourself?
Good points John.
I know in my case I probably run at 50% efficiency owing to my lack of drive and skill in certain areas.
I would say to get the maximum I need a manager as I am far to single minded in what I do .
P.S no I would not employ me as I keep pilfering the Chocolate Biscuits
