On identical products price is a HUGE factor in our experience. I disagree with you on the look and feel of the site being unimportant although accept for many it may not be. I think for the extra cost of building something decent why take the risk.
If I see a site that's dirt cheap but looks iffy I click away. I need the 'trust' factor.
It's not so much a site being ugly, one man's meat and all that. For me it's if the site looks like it belongs to a 'proper' company. There are so many wingers in webland.
Mind you, a while back we had some investigators contacting us from the USA about a site selling Classic Box Set DVDs. They had used one of our templates so assumed we had a connection with the company. Needless to say they were scammers. The thing is when I looked at the site I could just see it was suss, I wouldn't have punched in the number of my plastic in a million years but folk obviously did.
I think as things progress online the need to look credible and build trust will increase. Just my opinion though

Couldnt agree more
eventually people will become more and more site savvy and start to tune into 'proper companies' or the 'fly by nights'

Trust is built in many ways....like real phone numbers, names and addresses. Testimonials that can be verified. Trust logos and so on.
And as for "proper websites" ....take a look at Dan Kennedys experiments with clunky copy - which outsold pristine copy. Some clunkiness makes you seem human.

I would go along with that,Too much polish can be a bit off putting and make a company seem inaccessable, bit like I will probably feel when I go to Buckingham palace for me knighthood.
There is also the point that these days I have to walk past Rolls Royce showrooms ,as a poor pensioner.
" to err is human" or home made cakes are usually better than Mr Kiplings.?
