I think it holds big importance since most customers now are practical. As much as possible they prefer buying online products that have high quality but less expensive... They still want some discounts before they consider to buy them.
Of course, it does depend on the product, and it does depend on your target audience, but:
Because the online world is more open, and because price based research (or any research) is not MUCH easier, it is more important than before to at least be competitive.

I always expect the online price to be a bit cheaper than the shop price to be honest, so if I am looking for a particular item I check the in store price then compare prices online.
I only do this for practical items but if they are luxury items (pot pouri, candles etc) then I dont compare prices I just get the ones I want.
I also always google what I want then compare prices of the items on page 1 sites to those on page 4-6 sites (the little guy often gives discounts!!)
