Maybe it is because of the way these numbers can/will/are percieved that the free option is the only viable one for those who "sell" or give them away?, maybe??

I think they key to 0844 numbers is how they are used , if you are running a local campaign , dont use them , if you are running a national campaign then its worthwhile using them.

I have used it on my forum too , and I did'nt get one call. The larger companies sseem to have success with them though.

silly question but how much does an 0844 number cost to ring?

..and then to follow up... (because it could be free for all I know)

Why not put that at the bottom of the leaflet so that everyone knows

you are of course spot on James , and if we use a 0844 number in the future, we will add that all calls are charged at local rate:-)

There is no such thing as a 'local rate' number any more. It doesn't cost most people anything to call a geographic number. It cost me 1p a minute to call a geographic (01/02) number anywhere in the UK and 4p a minute to call an 0844/0870 number, far better to have an 0800 or an 03 number if you need a non geographic number.
