Hi all,

What is the score, in terms of legality, with those banners you see people attaching to railings etc by roads in towns?

IE the ones that are like a canvas type material tied up onto the grates?

Are they illegal?

You are supposed to get permission from the local council. You cannot just own, for example, a big building, and whop a 100ft banner on the side.

I meant more the smaller ones that you see people putting up around traffic lights etc

We are looking at ways of advertising and are not sure how to proceed

Why not get one of those huge hordings you see in fields next to motorways. I don't think they are too expensive.

well many will be stuck up illegally, and I think that can also reflect your business. MLM uses traffic lights and the cheap and cheerful promo does it not help it's reputation.

It depends what you have in mind. If you want to use gates and railing you need permission form the owner who should know, if they do it regularly enough, if they have council permission.

Did you know that you cannot legally hang flags and banners from your bedroom windows such as England flags for World Cup time? Thought they dont do anything about it (they would lose at the next election if they did!).

Do you have vehicle graphics on your company vehicles?

As long as the vehicle is legally parked it can make a very effective temporary hoarding

If you put vinyl banners up on fences, bridges etc the local council will remove them. Usually they just hold them for you to collect. You can get away with pleading innocence on the first go, but that's all I would think!

Very interesting to know about the flags and windows, its something I have ever really thought about before til you mentioned it just now.
