I heard about this yesterday, a friend of mine was due to go away with them tomorrow! Luckily he's managed to book something else.

Alitalia will be next ...

Entire communities flew XL for their annual fortnight at the beach to places like Florida and Alicante.

I'm not so worried about the airline themselves but feel more for the hoteliers and employees affected at the resorts serviced by the airline.

Airlines come and go but there will be a glut of cheap holidays or redundant people if the vacancies cannot be filled in a hurry...

Lehman Bros, a huge investment bank in America have filed for bankruptcy.

It's reported they have incurred losses of billions of dollars in the struggling US mortgage industry.

I'm looking forward to some positive news from that side of the pond which will hopefully have a knock-on effect over here.

I think we might hear of more banks going the same way at Lehman. Washington Mutual, Bradford & Bingley, AIG and HBOS are all struggling. And yesterday 10 of the world's largest investment banks announced that they would be creating a $70 billion liquidity fund to protect themselves in case things things get worse.

It's always interesting to look into the knock on effects of the current market conditions. For example, the XL collapse impacted West Ham football club who had XL as their shirt sponsor. The club won't take a big financial hit by this, but they will look to take on a new sponsor asap, possibly well reduced from the going rate.

As for Alitalia, 3000 job cuts have today been announced by the Italian government.

I hope Thomson stay OK.

I'm off to Tenerife at the end of Oct.

Glad I booked a while ago, I notice the exact same flights have gone up by £100..

XL had a good reputation as one of the better scheduled airlines in the travel industry.

One of many travel companies to fold I fear.
