The reason I ask that we recently did some research into the data from our business lead service and found that there had been a noticeable jump in new businesses starting up over the last few months (over 11% more startups than the same period last year).
I wondered if people are maybe thinking their jobs aren't safe so are taking the plunge - I also heard recently that teacher recruitment has leapt up, especially in the City. Or maybe partners who weren't working are now starting a business to earn extra cash?
Its easier to start up now, there are more and more resources available online, free advice from forums!! and crucially you can create a brand and corporate image without business premises and huge marketing costs. Ultimately the finacial risks are lower during market testing and start up. The work ethic hasnt changed though - its still bloody hard work!!
There has also been a more relaxed attitude from employers, removing clauses from contracts prohibiting employees owning or running another business - provided it is not in competition with their employment (no conflict of interest) and that all business activities are carried out off the premises.

I hope for a lot of people's sake the cash crisis sorts itself out pronto because people always underestimate the cash required and at the moment you cant get credit for love or money.
I blogged about a recent survey on this which said that people WERE staring businesses because they were afraid of redundancy
