One Water; Providing Water in Africa by Selling Water in the UK
I met this company yesterday at the SIE summit, and I have to say that their business concepts amazes me.
One Water is a not for profit business that puts wells and waters into villages in Africa by selling water, ordinary bottled water, in the UK. The wells work on the basis of play pumps, which are installed in the school playgrounds, as the children play on the roundabouts this draws the water up from the well.
Collecting water is usually the girls job, and so by putting the pumps in the schools the organisation is aiding the education of children, and in particular young girls. It also means that the pump tends to come under the care of the Teachers, and so less open to misuse.
The schools use the water too for additional projects, for example growing vegetables and fruit, which one school has then sold the surplus gaining enough revenue to buy six computers for the school.
One water are looking to raise their profile, and particularly in the high streets. I no longer have any high street presence, and am very tied up with our business.
And that if you think this project is as amazing as I do, that you forward it onto anyone that you know who has the potential (or a contact that has the potential) to sell or promote One Water.
It costs £7500 to buy, instal, and maintain a pump in a village. I think this is a truely amazing project.
NB One Water will be launching a competition on World Water Day (22nd March) for entries for the best method to raise the profile of One Water on the high street.
