Thanks SBP! I have just sorted this out. I did save a copy of the original but there was only 1 line in the .htaccess file anyway so there wasn't much to mess up. Through this exercise I have now learnt what can be done with the .htaccess file. (Thanks for starting this thread Sal! sorry to hijack! ). For info this contains information on the .htaccess file and what it can be used for.
I am aware that I can make the changes in Google but I want it to be effective for other search engines too, so this solves the problem.
Am really pleased everyone is getting their's sorted and now know what it's called.
I know you can do harm Chub which is why I was asking for quotes to sort it out, nothing I would want to tinker with.
So as I can't just plonk a bit of code in a file and upload it would anyone be willing to quote for doing this work? My .htaccess file has all sorts of stuff already in it so I don't want to play with it.
Have tried getting a quote from my programmer but he isn't answering me.

Can anyone give me a quote for dealing with my Canonicalisation problem.
I understand I have 4 different URLs for my site but this is way beyond my understanding to deal with.
Thanks
hang on, I just sent a PM to help, but reading the original post again it looks like nothing to do with your htaccess.
Are you saying that you have domain.com as the main site but also own domain1.com, domain2.com... and want them to point to the main site?
If that is the case then you need to do a 301 redirect in the control panel where the domain resides. Some registrars do not allow a 301 redirect but a 302 temporary redirect, so you need to clarify with them. If they don't support it then change domain registrar to on that does.
My problem is solved thanks to A1 members. My thanks to Mick and Redevo. Mick sorted my non www URL out and Dave at Redevo noticed and then sorted a further URL problem. I am good to go on the canonicalisation problem.
Thanks guys.
