    Default best website ever???

What do people think is the best website and for what reason? I'm a web developer and wanted to get some feedback from web users to find out what you look for in a website, is it a good design, good offers, good content, big or small companies?

General idea on what you think is the best website you have visited and what you think makes it so good

I haven't seen it yet or I'd remember

But what I like and dislike about websites is as follows:

    Dislike

Long paragraphs and whole pages of text = dull

    Ads

    Pop ups

    Moving things

    Small font

    light text on dark background

Busy page, several columns and can't find the damn price anywhere

    Like

Less is more...page not too busy
    Large font
    Dark text on light background
    Images
    Short paragraphs

Websites that don't look like adverts are nice

Too many are samey samey these days.

    Hope this helps

    Leah

Content is king. I like sites that provide me with useful information. Google is the best site on the internet. Nowadays, for me, Google is the internet. If its not on google, its not on the internet.

As for design, I do not care.

"While a free, text-oriented project like Wikipedia could not compete with the graphics and design of Encarta, that wasn’t important to consumers." People who like their well designed websites, take note. Content and Google rankings are key.

I prefer big sites because they are more creditable in my opinion. With small sites there is more chance of false information. Big sites have a reputation to protect so are more likely to care about the quality of their site. If I came across a 1 page wonder website, from Joe Nobody, I would have to double check the information on it. I look for signs of credibility, eg, association with known brands, trackbacks from reputable sites, feedburner stats and so on. When I read forums like this, I do trust people more who use their real name and/or signature links.

White text on black background, boggles the eyes so it's an instant click away.

    Good design and good content.

One of the best designed sites I have seen of late is: http://www.tutorial9.net/

Two of my favourite sites for content are:

    http://www.seobythesea.com/
    http://hamletbatista.com/

This is one I am probably going to read more:

    http://www.usereffect.com/

Sites where the owner(s) engage with site users/browsers are good. So long as they don't play the role of coming down from their ivory towers.

OT, but interesting the 3 out of 4 of David's choices are built on the WP platform.

I like the BBC site, something for everyone, updated every second (IIRC so they say) I love the iPlayer and the various radio stations I tend to have on my favourites panel. From pop music to politics to talkshows whatever the mood, I always have something to listen to,well worth the licence fee.
