    Default Disable copy and paste

    Hi all,

Having just completed a sizeable online glossary, I wanted to find a simple way of deterring a certain element from copying and pasting the screen content (BTW the source code is condensed which makes it difficult to read).

So folks, I stumbled upon this: http://www.hypergurl.com/norightclick.html

    which recommends having a body tag like this: <body bgcolor="#FFFFFF" ondragstart="return false" onselectstart="return false">.

    It seems to work OK.

P.S. I'm sorry if I'm going over old ground for some of you seasoned techies out there!

You cant stop people cutting and pasting text from your website. If you use the above code then all you have to do is disable javascript on your browser.

You could prevent people from copying it if you maybe made it into a flash file - but then again there are ways to break into them too, but its a little harder.

Thanks for the info Baz. Where there's a way there's a will eh? The little b*****s.

I will still use the extra bit of code though to deter the less well informed.

    Cheers - Mike Dove.

I'm not sure how much data you're talking about here. But in the past I wrote a module that added the text to an image or multiple images and displays that instead of the text. The text can then still be read but is not accessible via the source code. Kind of like a Captcha image.

But if it's a lot of text that means more server load, big images and slower page loads...it all depends on how important the data is.

As Barry says, using flash would be a simplier approch and your average web surfer would have no idea how to crack an swf file, so at least that would be an extra level of security.

Also, this doesn't cover the copy and paste scenario, but have a look at Obfuscation of your HTML code, this can help stop screen-scraping...

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for your input walsharoo (like the name by the way).

I've just done some interesting research on html obfuscation but at the end of the day I need the content to be picked up by Google as I want the pages to eventually serve as a vehicle for advertising a few bits and bobs.

I must admit that the content doesn't exactly conquer any major new frontiers. Maybe I was just getting another one of those bouts of being possessive.

    Good on ya.

You can put digital signatures on your images, if you really really wanted to get into protecting images....

Unless you make the text into an image, there's very little that can be done to protect it. There's Right-click, Ctrl+C, View Source, Save web Page As...

Default There are a few methods

Use a PDF, and lock it in the security sections (you set these settings when using PDF writer on save)

    also read this: http://www.placeofdesign.com/protecting-images-online

the plugin mentioned can protect a page, but at a cost
