Yes that is what I want. I have done the ad but now can't find out how to add it to the sidebar of my blog. Have looked up a zillion things on blogs and sites but they all talk about adding a banner to the header not in the sidebar

You could use a text widget. Just put the html code in the widget to display your banner.

I assume that would work, I've used it to display normal images before.
