opening .gif in PS

Easiest way around this Sal is to just select all>copy>new layer>paste>delete locked background layer>save in different format

It wouldn't let me make a new layer but I just make a new file the same size and pasted into there - works a treat, thank you sweetie.

I think the reason you couldn't create a new layer was becuase the file was INDEXED.

When you open up a .gif file in photoshop its colour mode will be set to 'indexed'. If you want to resize or change colours then change the colour mode to 'RGB' before doing any editing

Otherwise you will get very jagged edges, colour problems and no ability to use layers.

IMAGE > MODE > RGB

What was the score in the end?

As pI said, it's probably because it's an Index file.
In that case go to Image > Mode > RGB Color

If a layer is locked, open the layers palette (windows > layer), select the layer that's locked and then click the lock at the top of the layers palette.

If it is a gif animation, open the file in photoshop as normal and then open the animation window - Window > Animation

All these depend on which version you are running but generally they are the same.

Thank you everyone, I finished them by creating a new one the same size and just copying the image over, then I could work on it but shall try the RGB thing next time.
