i do my own website and have used software called Sitespinner. but i feel it may be a bit basic so was wondering what other software is out there that does a good job but doesn't cost a fortune and is simple (ish) to use

If it is simple low cost web design software you are looking for, check out: www.websitex5.com - I think it is pretty good because it is high level, therefore quite easy for novices to use, some software can be too low level for normal end users.

If you're able to do some of your own coding, you could also try NVU. With a WYSIWYG editor it's quite user friendly. I've tried it on my Mac, and while I was fairly impressed, I still ended up going back to Dreamweaver (I just can't seem to tear myself away from overpriced software!)
NVU is available for the PC, Mac and Linux. And it's free!
i have also ben recommended to use serif web plus, any views on this?
Although I wouldn't use Serif WebPlus for our business and the services we provide for someone wanting to make their own website then yes, I think WebPlus is a very good tool. I have used Serif WebPlus just to try it and would recommend it for designing your own site using a WYSIWYG interface.
