i have had a forum recently set up for me and was wondering about how difficult is it to but adverts on there? like banners and things that when clicked go to the advertisers site.
is it seriously technical or can somebody with a basic knowledge do this?
Depends on what you want to do exactly. To have a simple banner link to one site is fairly easy, if you want some kind of rotator for multiple ads that adds a bit more complexity. Also if you want to track the clicks that adds complexity.

in an ideal world i would like the banners to change each time the page is refreshed, (that type of thing) so a selection of banners can be added rather than just the one single banner
It's relatively easy on vBulletin (even I worked it out eventually!) but I see that you're using phpBB. There must be a support forum for it - why not check there?
