You can get a wordpress blog that presents as a website and for around £12 you can add your own unique domain name.

See mine here (though you do tons better than this) http://www.creativeblogger.org

You can also create free blogger.com blogs and add your own domain name though I bought one for a blogger blog and the transfer didn't work for some reason.

You can buy more professional looking templates than those offered too, though there is a wide selection.

These are better than 'free websites' as you can add more pages whereas free websites usually have one page and carry their own ads.

    Meanwhile there is also

    • bravenet
    • 123 reg

Both have free single page website packages

    123reg is a pain in the ar*e, that's what I have now.

Mrsite.com is very reasonable and you can edit html and add more features than with 123 reg. I have a site with them. You can get a site for under £40 ish annually. Easy to construct with mrsite.

I also have a low package website deal with vistaprint.co.uk (£4 a month). Their templates are very professional looking and they provide images and such that you can use. Again features list is limited. But you can get your business identity matching and so on.
(I'd reccomend these probably for a budget website)

Bravenet.com give you lots of free extra's which are very useful. The creation system is more complicated than some of the other packages though and you can get lost in technobabble.

    Lots to think about.

I would also recommend using Wordpress and using some of the better free or paid themes. Dead easy to set up and a great alternative when budget rules or when testing something out.

Could not agree more indi. We have been promoting pre-made wordpress theme templates (amongst others) for a while and they offer such value for money.

You do not need to spend a bomb but you do need to select your chosen site carefully.

Buy one and I will tell ya

Kidding, it is a theme. You install it into your content/theme directory and activate it. You can have it straight off the shelf or customised to meet your business image.

    Thats it.

yep this is the bit I don't get

    installing it in content/theme directory.

I've looked into this before and there was mention of plugins and things and it all seemed very technobabbelonia, else I would have bought one before now.

Can you do domain name transfers also?

I find most clients don't want to know the tehcno stuff and would just rather I did it all; what takes us 5 mins to install WP and add a theme takes some folk an hour or more to figure it out. I do them as favours as its quicker than explaining how to do it, so actually cheaper for me at my hourly rate

! I'm a brummy too, where about you from? I was born & grew up around Castle Brom.

With regards to WP Templates: download, unzip, upload (ftp over) to the WP /themes/ directory and then activate in the wordpress backend.

Nice and easy, some of the 'pro' themes have specific tags etc you can apply to posts, they usually come with instruction though.

As an above post mentioned you can tweak them to fit more specific uses to but that's obviously akin to building a normall php/css cms based site and so a little more complex. Also you'd have to check the T&C some may not allow 'tweaks'..

A basic theme install is easier than the install WP though.
