I would avoid going for a colour scheme that matches a zillion others on the Internet

If you do opt for 'safe' blue (as I have) try and make it look a little different

Isn't that just contradicting yourself? Blue probably is the most used colour on a web page, apart from black...

The best colours to grab attention are the primary colours, and yellow

Nice combination. Just use the red sparingly

Great post by Entro, some very useful info there.

For my two cents, be wary of trying to be to different. Use the info above and relate back to colour psychology and the corporate image you wish to portray.

I recommend white , blue and grey. (with a bit of orange & yellow thrown in) Works well in my opinion. Great posts to some helpful sites

Once everyone is happy with the layout and content focus - THEN add a colour scheme.

It will save time and you'll have better end results. Early on rather than people saying things like 'I don't like green' - they will say things like 'I can't find the search box easy enough."

Get the userbility and functionality right first. Design 2nd.
i agree with custardfish, userbility and accessability are two of the most important factors in web design. Without it people wont even care about the colours they'll just leave!

i'd say just find some sites that you like the look of and try and adapt your colour schemes to that. colours are like musical notes - in the end no one creates original songs because they have to use the same notes as everyone else.

just go with what you like the look of.
