Lock ups are possible with overheating but you tend to find that your graphics card will overheat first - then you get screen 'artifacts'. The whole thing just freezing indicates to me a CPU issue.

In my experience, when CPUs overheat, they'll just either shut down (along with the PC) or just melt!

A good old de-gunge will work wonders but I'll bet there's something hogging and freezing your CPU rather than overheating it.

    You could be right.

I was on the verge of buying more memory before all this started so I might just go down the clean and upgrade memory route first.

It's cetainly cheaper than a new PC if it fixes the problem.

I agree with Eagle tbh, the overheating would normally switch off the Pc.

    What I'd try:

    1) Ensure you removed Norton Properly, using the Norton Removal Tool
    2) Once it is comepletely removed, go into McAfee control panel and ensure all is up to date and all 'problems' fixed
    3) Download and run CCleaner
    4) Download and run Malwarebytes (useful as a little addition to your normal IS product, in your case McAfee
    5) Clean the inside of the machine thoroughly, I use a clean paintbrush on all fans, etc, plus a good hoovering (ensure you do not knock any components with the end of the hoover)

If it is still misbehaving, then let us know, as there are many tools which will test the temperature, etc.

Just a thought (not specific to this issue) that no one seems to have suggested. Try looking in event manager for error events that occur just before any crash. If the same errors occur before each crash then it can help narrow down the issue.
