    Default Noisy Phone Line

Just recently (about the same time I got xcomputer freezes but I think the two are unrelated) I started to notice my phone line is getting very noisy.

I have a router going out through an ADSL Micro-Filters which also has my phone going through it.

Now a can hear an audible fuzzing, hissing noise when I pick up the phone. Not all of the time but quite often.

Last night my broadband connection kept dropping and reconnecting.

So, any ideas if this phone noise is something at my end or should I report to BT. How do I check? I recall someone once posting a number you can call that engineers use to check phone noise on the line.

Also, my micro filters are a few years old now. I recall reading somewhere that they should be replaced regularly.

The advice of the wizards on here is always welcome

Microfilters can degrade over time. Try a new one first.

Try the phone plugged straight in to your master phone socket without the ADSL to see whether its the ADSL affecting the line quality.

Try a different phone as well in case that is faulty.

You could also try plugging your phone and broadband straight in to the engineers test socket and see if you get any noise then. http://www.plus.net/support/broadban...t_socket.shtml

If you still get noise in the test socket with new microfilters and a different phone it would probably be an outside fault, so you should call BT.

    .
    Check ALL interior possibilities first.

If the fault is found to be from your end, you WILL be charged. Otherwise it should be free.

Make sure you contact the supplier you're through ( if you are with someone else ) and they will contact BT for you.

ADSL is very sensitive to disruptions on the line so the fact that your like kept on dropping and reconnection could suggest that the filters are not performing well. Try calling yourself and see if the ADSL line drops when you pick up the phone. If that happens then it's surely the filters.

Also your router's admin interface might show noise levels on the line.
