I am trying to get to grips with my new wordpress site, and have figured out how to upload pics. Trouble is I cannot fathom how to put text by the side of your pics.
On my current site I can do this no problem, but tearing my hair out at the moment. It takes me soooo long to figure things out and its SO darn frustrating when I know you techie guys could tell me in a couple of seconds.
Is it that you're trying to caption your images? In that case WordPress currently has no built in image captioning - simple as that
The solution is to either build your pages slightly differently and find a way to caption, find a captioning plugin (there's a few about, quality varies though) or use a different system/theme. Some themes will bring in captioning - something we'll probably add to the ones we release.
Whoops sorry I miss understood ... I thought you meant you couldn't put your photos next to your sections of text.
If you are wanting to label your pic with a caption you could try adding an alt tag by putting some text in the image description field when you set up the pic but this only works if your visitor rolls the mouse curser over the pic.
No Sue, you are correct. I want to add text next to a picture. I can upload the pic fine, but then I cannot add the text!
It's all very new to me at the moment and its sooo frustrating. I also cannot seem to SEO the pics. By that I mean, when you put the cursor over the pic you get text.
Mmm ... I've been chewing over this while I've had my tea ... I'm a Wordpress novice myself so it'll be a good learning experience for me
If you are wanting to add a caption to a specific picture ... for example a picture of a lady grooming a dog with the words "The XYZ brush shown here is ideal for long haired dogs" you could use a graphics programme to make the image background bigger so that there is empty space under the photo for you to type the text in to and then save the pic which now has it's own caption as an image to insert in to the Wordpress post.
I usually type my posts in Notepad first so that I can shuffle bits about and decide how I want it and then I paste it in to Wordpress. Then I add pictures and any links that I want to include. Last thing before I publish is the spell check.
To add a picture to the page of text I just click next to the text where I want the picture to be and then click the insert/edit picture button (or ALT + SHIFT + M if you prefer to use your key board). Anything that you type in the image description field will appear on the screen when you roll your mouse curser over the pic. I don't know but I imagine that it's handy to put keywords in this field. If you're not wanting text to pop out then I would just leave the image description field blank.
Take a look at the pics on my blog and then you can ask me how I've done something or how to avoid something I've done.
All this is assuming that everyone's Wordpress control panel is the same ... which I don't know. I realise that different themes have different restrictions but unfortunately I'm still only on the basics so we need a Wordpress superstar to wade in if I've messed up big time with my advice

You may not like this answer , but it should work!!!
Go into Presentation..edit..stylesheet
Put two extra things in that file
If I understand you correctly Petnanny you want to insert an image and have a paragraph of text at the left or right of the image?
Write your post.
Under the text entry box it says upload - upload your image
click where you want to insert the image and press the little square picture of a tree above the text box
then once you see the image click on it and a small box will appear. Press Alignment and select left or right and save. That will move the text next to the picture.
If you are using WP 2.5 it is even easier:
Above the text entry box, where it says visual/html there is a small white box with a grey rectangle in - click it.
That will let you upload an image from your computer or add the url for the image and below it will ask you how you want it aligned.
Hope that helps

Must admit, havent even tried 2.5 as yet...I will load it onto one of my sites and have a look
But the reason I use the DIV containers mentioned is itis not restricted to pictures, thats a generic way to have blocks of anything, text, lists - and also you can easily add borders, background colours, control padding and so on - so you can add a block of anything alongside the text.
