Laptop help please

My partner is just about to throw it out the window.

He has an old Compaq laptop (it's a dinosaur) about a month ago he had to send it to the repair people at comet (it has a long warranty) as it wouldn't hold any power in the battery, they returned it with a new electrical lead and told us to buy a new battery, so we did and it worked for 10 mins before dying. After an argument with comet they came back to pick it up and replaced the harddrive, but since then the laptop keeps turning itself off every couple of minutes and re-setting.

Any ideas?

Mine went through a phase of doing that couple of months back. Turned out to be the wireless card so I uninstalled the programme and as I happened to have a brand new spare, I just uploaded new drivers and used a new card. It worked fine from that day forward.

does the laptop actually turn off? or just reset?
Does it say windoze is shutting down or just restart?
What Windows is on it? XP?

You need a Vaio!!!!!!! Compaqs are useless, I speak from bitter experience. I lease mine from PC world and it's my baby and I love it!!!

and yet I had a few within a year and they were a pile of pants

I agree, Vaio's have had a bad history with me, and their support is rubbish.

It could be a few things Nicky, more than likely the charging unit is knackered, I think his money would have been better spent on a new laptop

I've come downstairs this morning to find it in a pile in the corner of the room :sad1:

You would think the fact that it was so old and going wrong all the time that Comet would just replace it, but they keep telling him that it isn't broken

From what I can see it just keeps resetting, not turning off, or it just crashes or wont open properly and gets stuck on the black screen. He has wiped everything and then reloaded windows xp, but still no luck.

It went wrong a couple of months back, and I panicked so we had to go out and buy a proper computer so the laptop is really just for him.

ok sounds like you may have multiple problems, a corruption on the operating system could be one of them and it could be caused by bad sectors on the hard drive - reinstalling doesn't fix this.

you say its so old, how old? comet only have to replace in 30 days otherwise it takes on the manufacturers warranty.

If you want to I'll look at it but you would need to send it to me. I won't charge for my time, you just pay the carraige.
