My Norton internet security subscription is about to expire and before I renew, I wondered if there's anything better on the market that you'd recommend I had a look at first. I don't know if Norton is very well thought of, but I've been renewing for a few years and - touch wood - never had a virus or anything nasty happen, so am quite happy to stick with them if these products are all much of a muchness.
I do all my shopping/banking etc., online, so need something reliable, but it also needs to be something that requires little/no input from me to work (norton just ticks away in the background and then tells me when there's been a problem and that it's fixed it).
In my experience Norton has just about the worst detection rate of just about all available Anti-Virus software. I remember testing the security quite a while ago and with only minor changes to known viruses, you could make them undetectable by Norton.
Again also in my experience Norton can introduce more problems on a computer than its meant to fix - normally I remove Norton from all computers I'm responsible for.
AVG Free is not Free for businesses. You can download / install it sure, but the BSA decide to audit your business - something which you've already agreed to but no doubt unaware of, but you are by having installed Microsoft software. (Its in the EULA which no one bothers to read!)
You will be culpable for a fine, and the BSA are not known to be helpful or act kindly to this type of infringement by businesses.

You can however use for personal use Free Of Charge
Although (most) people here are using there computers for business, and having a few mp3's on the hd won't pass it off as a personal machine so for the sake of £30-40 you can find much better software, and save yourself any hassle over licenses.
I've seen many a story of an ex-employee or customer informing the bsa about licensing issues.

Both have trials available which I think you should try before committing to purchase.
Wow, that's a pretty damning review of Norton. Just shows - I've never looked into it at all. Just always renewed it without question.
Many thanks for the recommendations, Martin - will look into them tonight.
Thanks also to CPLTD - appreciate the heads up, but as my computer will (eventually) be used pretty much solely for business use, I'd better not go down the free route, though would have been great to save some cash otherwise.

Thanks both
no problem Louise let me know if you need any prices for the above mentioned software as we always carry stock,
There are two packages available the NOD32 anti-virus and the ESET Smart Security package. The smart security package includes the anti-virus software that the NOD32 anti-virus package has, as well as a firewall, which you may find useful for extra protection.
There are also two categories for the software (Home & Business Editions), however the minimum purchase for the business edition is 5 licenses. That would obviously be quiet expensive if you are just covering one computer. If you are just covering less than 5 computers and have no servers; you are allowed to use the home edition even for business use.
I had an offer in the offers section offering 20% off both editions, which I would be more than happy to extend for you
I hope this helps, if you have any questions do not hesitate to contact me.
I would recommend Avast!. These are the guys who make security software for government sites and framework for other security suites like Kaspersky, Mc Afee etc etc.
You can DL the free home use version here (takes you to download page then you select)
Edit - Forgot to mention Norton is a piece of crap by the way. It drain's around 48 - 52% of system resources too.
