you can use the Print Screen button which will copy the screen to the clip board, then open your favourite image editor and paste it in
 If you want just the current window hold Alt when you press it

I cast another vote for Snagit.... It can do all sorts of other things, such as rip edge borders, and watermarks...
If you want to record screen as a movie ...then there is a free tool called camstudio...can email if you need. Although Camtasia is best.
