I want to create a couple of directories on my forum. I see there is software out there for this but are they any good and can they be customised to look like the forum

would I be better to have them designed from the ground up so to speak?

Esyndicat is a very good script. they ahve a free and a paid version. the script is free, and the source is open (with the exception of the odd page). ES also uses the smarty templating system, so is a walk in the park to skin. I think the paid one also integrates with some forum software.
