i get this sometimes - does it go away?

On some computers the OS loads up the checks quicker than the actual firewall can enable.

if you look at the bottom right and there is still a small red circle with an x in it then it warrants further, more serious investigation. If that goes away then Id judt double check your settings.

What firewall do you use? the built in one? or something like Zone Alarm?

We get this on the XP laptop, sometimes, and then after a few seconds the bloody thing catches up with its self.

I think our Martians must be breading.

It could be that the Windows service is set to manul start instead of automatic. To check go to:

Start > Run > Type "services.msc" and hit enter.

Scroll down until you find the Windows Firewall service and double click it.

On the General Tab, make sure that the Startup type is set to Automatic and the service is started. Click OK and close the services box.

There should be no reason for it to be on manual and if it is then you could have spyware/malware on your machine as suggested above.
