Default .htaccess file

At present my non www. version of my website does not load.
I have heard that a 301 redirect in the .htaccess file might fix this.

www.easycrane.co.uk - Loads
easycrane.co.uk - does not work

Would someone be able to tell me the line of code need to sort this out please.

Thanks

This might be a slightly different issue than the normal www 301 redirect would solve - but I've copied in the code I use below anyway.

In your case the non www version isn't resolving to your server, so the browser is never going to get to the htaccess file to prompt the redirect. The 301 redirect will only work where the non www version is already working, but you'd prefer all pages to start with www

Possibly server/host related. Setups can be very different, but in general there needs to be DNS settings for both www and non www

Did you configure these? or your host? they may be the best people to try next.

RewriteEngine on

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^yourdomain\.co.uk$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.yourdomain.co.uk/$1 [R=301,L]

Not sure if .htaccess will fix this, I suspect that your hosting has been configured wrongly. My advice would be talk to your hosting providers in the morning, explain the issue, they might be able to config your records properly.

hmmmmm, interesting. That's what I use on my site but even without it I can actually see something at the root - whereas you can't. Try it, let's see what happens - remember to set the right permission on .htaccess though. google it, 604 I think.

I'd be interested to see what the answer is here - I was under the impression that since easycrane.co.uk doesn't actually even show any files, that's being itself 'pointed' at the wrong place on the server (ie not to the root of your site on that server) so even if you put a .htaccess against that root, you still wouldn't be party to the redirects in that because when you go to easycrane.co.uk you're not at the root? so you're not at a place .htaccess 'governs' as such?

Heyho, whaddo I know.

yep, I'm with nass here. More likely a host/dns issue.

There is no DNS 'A' record for easycrane.co.uk, and that should be in place.

Unrelated, but one of the nameservers listed as SOA for easycrane.co.uk does not exist.

Who looks after your DNS? If it's not you, suggest you contact them to correct both these errors.

Thanks guys.

I've tried the .htaccess route and it does not work, so i'll be getting on to my host at Nitrex to sort it out.

I'll post the outcome for those that want to know
